What Does an Ananda Sunday Service Consist of?
Sunday Service begins with a Purification Ceremony (1st Sunday of the Month Only). This is followed by some devotional chanting and a brief meditation, ending with an uplifting affirmation. Then, a reading from commentaries on scriptures of East and West create the theme for an inspirational Talk. Our service concludes, with a “Festival of Light” ceremony.
“Your religion is not the garb you wear outwardly, the thoughts and beliefs in which you enclose yourself. Your religion is the garment of Light you weave around your heart.”—Paramhansa Yogananda
“I seek purification by the grace of God”
What is the Ananda Purification Ceremony?
The purification Ceremony, as it is offered by Ananda, is a simple and meaningful ceremony. It was created through the inspiration of Swami Kriyananda, who saw the need for a ceremony that allows one to open one’s heart to the flow of God’s grace.
Purification can be sought also when one is seeking help for others. In this case, it is a means of making yourself a clear channel of light to flow through you to them. Going up before others to request purification is an act of humility and an affirmation of the openness before God.
The Purification ceremony precedes the Sunday services from 10 am to 10:40 am. It begins with the recitation of two Sanskrit Mantras. This is followed by writing (optional) a purification request on a small slip of paper, provided for you on your chair in the Ananda chant booklet. Approaching the alter, you keep the paper with you.As you feel ready, come forward to the altar and stand before the ministers (who are acting on behalf of the Masters), and say “I seek purification by the grace of God.” Feel the Masters blessing you in your heart with grace to be purified. Then burn your written request and put it in the bowl provided. Pray for a moment at the altar and then return to your seat.
Remain in a silent prayerful state throughout the ceremony, praying for each of your fellow participants.
